Abstract for the seminar

One of the most important new challenges for art history is how it might respond to the looming global ecological crisis. Increasing numbers of art historians argue that there is an ethical and political obligation to incorporate awareness of ecological questions into art historical research. But what does that mean in practice? What forms might that take? What might it mean in the Czech context?

Prof. Andrew Patrizio (Edinburgh College of Art), a major figure in ecocritical approaches to art, author of The Ecological Eye (2019) and co-editor of Methods for Ecocritical Art History (2026), will be leading a seminar in the department of art history on ecocritical art history, where we will be able to explore these questions.

The seminar is open to all students, and you will be invited to put forward your own ideas of examples of artwork where an ecocritical approach is especially relevant.
