Art East/Central je mezinárodní recenzovaný časopis s otevřeným přístupem v anglickém jazyce, který vydává články o architektuře, designu a vizuálním umění ve střední Evropě od roku 1800 do dneška.
Časopis publikuje původní odborné články o umění, architektuře a designu ve střední Evropě a příbuzných oblastech, jako například muzeologii, umělecké kritice a teorii, estetice nebo trhu s uměním. Vítáme příspěvky s transnacionálním přístupem, které se zabývají praktikami, myšlením a tradicemi, jež překračují politické, lingvistické, etnické a kulturní hranice regionu. Přijímáme texty s interdisciplinárním přístupem, jakož i reflexe specifických problémů tohoto regionu, kterým příslušné akademické debaty čelí. Časopis uveřejňuje knižní recenze i diskuzní fóra. Vydává také speciální čísla na konkrétní témata a návrhy na ně editoří vítají.

The common thread tying together the articles in this issue of the journal is the question of narrative and interpretation. Each of them deals with a different topic, from folk art to performance art in the 1970s, but they all deal with questions about the kinds of narratives and interpretations that have been deployed by art historians in relation to their respective topics.

When this journal was launched, it was stated that it would be focused on the period from 1800 to the present. No sooner was that stated than the journal broke its own rule, by including a round-table discussion ‘Globalizing Early Modern Central and Eastern European Art,’ which addresses the issues related to the historiography of art in east central Europe before 1800. However, we felt that the calibre of the discussion, and the importance of the issues it raised, made its inclusion in Art East Central a logical decision.

We are proud to launch Art East Central as a journal that will act as a forum for scholarly articles and discussion on the art, architecture and design of East Central Europe since 1800. It will be the only such journal in English, and its aim is to disseminate knowledge and stimulate debate about the art and culture of a large geographical region that, for many, remains terra incognita.
